What is Dynamic DNS?

Name Your Space

Sometimes you want to be followed.

Using the technology of Dynamic DNS, DNS2Go allows you to remotely access your computer, DVR, webcam, camera system, and other devices using an easy to remember domain name. Simply install the DNS2Go client software to your network and your domain will update whenever your IP address changes.

If you've ever considered hosting a web or FTP site chances are you would want a domain name so that friends and family could use "yourdomain.com" to reach you. But this usually isn't possible simply because a domain name must point to a static IP address, and there's a good chance that yours changes. It could change daily, hourly, weekly, whatever.

What you need is for your domain name to follow your ever-changing IP address so that other users on the Internet can easily reach you or you can easily reach a remote device from anywhere.

DNS2Go is the solution to this problem. DNS2Go allows anyone to associate a friendly, easy-to-remember domain name with their computer.

DNS2Go is the perfect service for those seeking to leverage the true potential of their computer and Internet connection. Host your own website. Access your home computer from work. Host an FTP server so that you can exchange files with family and friends.

It Just Works

DNS2Go is extremely easy to use; you can sign up for a DNS2Go domain (such as yourname.dns2go.com), or you can register your own domain (such as yourname.com). If you decide to use a DNS2Go domain, you'll have no less than twenty-five sub-domain options to choose from.

Once you've decided what type of domain name you want, you simply install a small piece of software on the computer that the domain will point to, and complete the DNS2Go account sign-up process. It's as simple as that.

But how does it work, exactly?

The DNS2Go client software is installed on the computer with which you want to associate your domain name. The software always knows your computer's current IP address, and it quietly and automatically notifies the DNS2Go service whenever that IP address changes. The DNS2Go service then modifies the DNS zone records associated with your domain, and the change takes effect almost immediately. The bottom line is that anyone typing your domain name into a web browser or other client software will be led to your current IP address. No matter how often it changes.

DNS2Go also uses a "heartbeat" protocol to determine when your computer has temporarily gone offline. DNS2Go can use this connection state knowledge in useful ways - by redirecting your domain name to a specified IP address whenever you go offline, for example. Or by redirecting web requests for your domain to an alternate URL.

A smarter approach

DNS2Go uses "intelligent" connection technology to ensure that you get connected to the DNS2Go service and stay that way. During the service connection process, DNS2Go can dynamically switch between DNS2Go service outlets, which are located on separate physical circuits. If the connection to one service outlet fails, the DNS2Go client software can automatically switch to another server. If your connection to the DNS2Go service is lost, the DNS2Go client will automatically try to re-connect, repeatedly... as many times as you configure it to do so. Alternatively, if your computer suddenly goes "off-line" (e.g. your Internet connection is broken), the DNS2Go client will wait patiently until your connection is restored and then automatically re-connect when it can.

The DNS2Go service infrastructure is supported by state-of-the-art hardware and connectivity, with multiple Internet connections for load distribution and failover. Redundant DNS2Go service and DNS servers virtually eliminate service downtime, but if a problem does occur the systems are monitored 24/7 by trained experts, ready at a moment's notice.
